After the former Namura Shipbuilding Osaka site was returned in 1988, various ways to repurpose its approximately 42,000 m2 land and buildings were explored. In the fall of 2004, with the launch of the 30-year art project NAMURA ART MEETING ’04-’34, this site began to be used as a hub for artistic and cultural activities.
In 2005, the creative space BLACK CHAMBER was established in the former office building, and Creative Center Osaka (CCO) opened, incorporating other facilities like STUDIO PARTITA. Making use of its industrial heritage potential, the site has since been utilized for various creative activities.
In 2007, it was designated a Modern Industrial Heritage Site by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.
