Rubber Duck Project
How the Rubber Duck Project came to be
In the summer of 2009, the Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009 event was scheduled to take place. However, due to changes in the government’s plans, it became clear that there was no symbol to convey the appeal of the waterfront.
It was then that then-president Yoshikazu Shibakawa remembered seeing a CG image of a giant rubber duck during his visit to Nantes, France.

Meeting Mr. Hofman
In January 2009, a visit was made to the studio of the Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, the creator of the Rubber Duck, where an agreement was successfully reached for its exhibition in Japan (Osaka).
Exhibition at Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009
During the Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009 event, the Rubber Duck was exhibited at Hachikenyahama Pier in Nakanoshima, Osaka, as part of a collaborative project.
The popularity of the Rubber Duck exploded as information about it spread via social media and blogs.
Although the exhibition was only 24 days, it left a lasting impression on the landscape and people of Osaka. Even after the exhibition ended, many messages of gratitude and hope for the Rubber Duck’s return were received.
The Rubber Duck was loved by many for its size and endearing charm, and came to symbolize Aqua Metropolis Osaka 2009. This project continues to inspire many people as an excellent example of how art can enhance the appeal of a city.
